Dear [NAME of MP in your riding]:

I am writing to you as a concerned Canadian about the alarming news that vessels bound for the Gaza Strip have been seized last November 4th. One of those vessels is the Canadian ship, the Tahrir, with Canadian passengers on board. The Tahrir is part of the Freedom Waves to Gaza.

The Freedom Waves is an international initiative with the goal of challenging the illegal blockade of Gaza, and bringing humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza in the spirit of the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1860 (2009).  In a report dated Sept. 13, 2011, following the release of the Palmer report, four independent UN Human Rights experts concluded that the blockade of Gaza is illegal: http://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=11363&LangID=E [1]

The Canadian boat was carrying much needed medical supplies and all people on the Tahrir were imprisoned in Israel for up to 6 days.

I am concerned that the Canadian government is giving in to pressures from the Israeli government and accepting that the Israeli government is acting within its right when imposing an inhumane blockade on 1.6 million Palestinians in Gaza and seeking to control international waters.

As the MP of my riding I urge you to speak out in Parliament for the legitimate right of those Canadians who wish to express their solidarity with fellow Palestinians in Gaza without being imprisoned by doing so, as well as

1. to provide all necessary assistance in the prompt recovery of the Tahrir, the medical aid, and all Canadian property on board that was seized violently during a lawful, peaceful voyage to Gaza, and for the completion of its mission;
2. to insist that Israel meet its obligations under international law by facilitating the unimpeded movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza, including by sea, in compliance with the United Nations Security Council resolution 1860.

I look forward to hearing from you what actions you have taken on the above.
