Western University Professor and Canadian Boat to Gaza Steering Committee Member, David Heap, talks to CHRW about the recent letter sent regarding the seized vessel, Tahrir, the Gaza Blockade, the seizing of the vessel itself, and how listeners can get involved in the campaign.

On June 11th, the Toronto Law Firm of Jackman Nazami and associates filed a letter on behalf of the Canadian Boat to Gaza Steering committee, requesting the return of the vessel, Tahrir, and its cargo that was illegally seized on international waters last November.The Gaza blockade blocks materials and goods from reaching 1.6 million Palestinian civilians living in the Gaza strip.
Western University Professor and Steering committee member, David Heap, talked to CHRW about the letter and why it was sent, and the seizing of the vessel last November by Israeli Navy members. Two Greek ships from the 2010 Freedom Flotilla were released by Israel earlier this month.Listen to radio report here:

Under Israel's maritime blockade, Palestinians are forbidden from
fishing more than three nautical miles from the coast.BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israel's navy fired at Palestinian fishermen off Gaza's coast on Sunday, witnesses said.
No injuries were reported.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said that a fishing boat had deviated from the designated fishing area, and after failing to respond to orders to return, warning shots were fired in the air.
The incident took place in the north west of Gaza, locals said.
Under Israel's maritime blockade, Palestinians are forbidden from fishing more than three nautical miles from the coast.

Interview conducted by Salah Mohsen, Adalah's Media CoordinatorWhat are the problems faced by fishermen in Gaza? When did these problems start?There has always been Israeli harassment and restrictions on the Gazan fishermen. These problems are linked to the overall political atmosphere, but they have escalated since the first Intifada as well as with the start of the second Intifada in 2000.In the Oslo Accords, it was agreed to allow the Palestinian fishermen to sail 20 nautical miles, which is equivalent to approximately to 37 km. This distance was never reached because Israel has restricted our movement at sea to a maximum of 12 nautical miles. Following the outbreak of the second Intifada, the distance was reduced to 6–7 nautical miles, and after the recent military offensive, Israel reduced the distance to 3 nautical miles.

Warnings should go to Israelis who are planning this summer's protests; experts should not warn Israelis about the dangers of burning down of a mosque, but rather, the dangers of their government.
